Kaby Lake desktop gaming system

{Skylake gaming system}

The "Skylake" chips offer great value-for-money on gaming systems.

Computer case

We have two different cases into which we build systems

♦    An Antec P100 quiet case, with a quiet PSU..
♦    A Gamemax quiet gaming case, which is also designed to be quiet but does not have as much room to add in extra hard drives.

Both cases have front mounted USB3 sockets as well as audio sockets.

{Motherboard choice}

We have two choices for the main motherboard:

♦    High spec "Z-series" Skylake motherboard with USB3.1
♦    Standard "H series" Skylake motherboard

The two boards are very similar.  The biggest difference is that the High spec board has USB3.1 on board where as the normal board has USB3 only. USB 3 is the standard we have been using for the last few years and is very fast.  USB3.1 is a new standard which is considerably faster with the right hardware.  Currently there is very little hardware available to take advantage of this, however, there will undoubtedly be many becoming available of the next few months.  Therefore, if you want a more "future proof" system is makes sense to get the motherboard with USB3.1 for not a great deal of extra money.

The Thunderbolt add-on board

The High spec motherboard can have a Thunderbolt board added to it so that you can take advantage of Thunderbolt devices.  Thunderbolt has been around for some time and there are many Thunderbolt devices available.  It is used more on MACS where there is no way to add any devices inside current Macs and Mac Pros, so they have to be added externally via Thunderbolt.  On a PC there is generally an internal PCI-e device which can do the same job as an external Thunderbolt device so Thunderbolt is not essential on a PC. The ability to possibly add a Thunderbolt board sometime in the future is nice, but not essential, but it is another thing which is different between the High spec and standard motherboard.

We have chosen the High spec motherboard as the default board in this system because we believe that most people will choose this option, given the small price difference.  Obviously it does not quite make sense that the "standard" motherboard is not the default one, but we did not want to call it "low spec motherboard" as that would give the wrong impression.  The standard motherboard is very good. The high spec motherboard is better and not much more money.

{Main hard drive}

Use an M.2 drive for Windows

The Skylake motherboard has 6 connections for hard drives and DVD/Blu-ray writers, plus a new type of hard drive connection for an "M.2 drive".  M.2 drives are made of the same kind of memory as solid state drives but are built into a circuit board and plug directly into the motherboard. They are generally faster than Solid state drives, with the very top models managing speeds of 6GB/s or even more.  The best use for the M.2 is as a drive for Windows as the system will boot faster and programs will open quicker.  This will also leave the other 6 hard drive connections free for you to add whatever combination of hard drives and optical drives you prefer.

You do not have to use an M.2 drive for Windows but there is very little reason not too as they are a very similar price to Solid state drives.  The only reason you may choose to use a different drive is if you want the option to easily swap your main drive - for example you have two different versions of Windows on the same machine and want to easily swap between them, so would want the main drives in caddies as the M.2 drive is screwed into the motherboard and probably obscured by all sorts of things inside the PC case.

Can I have two Blu-ray writers?

Yes.  Many people would like to this so they can copy a disc directly from one drive to another.  In our experience a direct copy like this works well for DVDs, but is not so reliable for copying Blu-ray discs.  If you are copying Blu-ray discs the best option is to make an image on the computer first and then write that to a disc, for which you would only need one drive.

I want 6x6TB drives but that is not an option, why?

We did not add this as an option simply because this page is very long and we did not think it would be an option many people would want.  Please contact us if you want some combination of drives that is not listed.

I want all my drives in caddies, is this possible?

Yes.  The current quiet case only supports 3 drive bays, 2 of which will be used with the card reader and optical drive. If you want 4 or 5 drives in removable bays we can do this but would need a different case as well as the removable bays.  Please contact us to discuss your options.

{Choice of quiet cases}

Antec P100 The Antec P100 Case

This case is designed to run as quietly as possible, whilst having as many drive bays as you can for reasonable expansion.  The door can be opened and left completely flat against the side of the case if preferred and doing so does not increase the noise level too much.

The case includes 2 drive bays which face the outside world - so you can have two optical drives or one optical drive and a card reader, as well as 6 internal drive bays.  It has two USB 3 and 2 USB 2 sockets on the top of the machine as well as a headphone and microphone socket.  More USB sockets are available at the back of the machine and another USB3 socket will be available on the card reader which is normally mounted inside the case.  We use a USB3 card reader is all our system specifications, unless you have asked us to remove it for some reason.

Case dimensions:
Height: 484 mm
Width: 220 mm
Depth: 523 mm

Please allow some extra space around the sides of the case to allow proper air flow.  Monitor cables and USB wires will require slightly more space at the back of the computer.  For example, the depth listed is the physical size of the case itself so there will be extra cables hanging out of the back that will need some room.  The case is a fairly normal size and actually slightly smaller than other quiet cases we have used.

Gamemax Silent gaming case

The second case we offer is also a quiet case, but at a lower price. This case has 2 large drive bays like the Antec case but only has space internally for 2 normal 3.5" drives and 3 2.5" laptop size drives. One of the 2.5" drives will probably be a solid state primary drive. The main reason to choose this case over the Antec is that you only need a couple of video drives and it is cheaper.

Case dimensions:
Height: 468 mm
Width: 230 mm
Depth: 475 mm

{Card Reader}

The USB3 card reader includes compact flash, SD card, Micro SD cards, Memory Stick Pro and 1 USB3 connection. Being USB3, transfer of footage off cards is as fast as possible.

{Delivery & payment}

Choose from the various options below to customize your system. The price shown will update automatically as you do so.

If you have any questions or would like some advice on why you would choose one option over another please give us a ring or email and we will be happy to discuss options with you.

Delivery

A delivery charge will be added to the system price depending on the location to which the system is being delivered. The average cost for delivery in the UK is 40. If you would like to come to our premises in Brighton to pick up the system the delivery will be removed. We will also spend and hour or tow with you helping to familiarize you with the system when you pick it up.

Payment

The webshop will only allow you to pay for the system by PAYPAL or credit/debit card. Payment for the full amount will be deducted from your account immediately. We normally take between 5 and 10 working days for build and testing. We will ring you before dispatch to advise the system is on the way.

If you pay by credit/debit card the system must be delivered to the address on the card, otherwise the order will be rejected.

If you would like to pay by a different method - BACS transfer for cheque, for example, contact us to discuss your options.
