DVD video version NOW AVAILABLE

Adobe's PREMIERE PRO is renowned as one of the most powerful and well-featured video editing programs available today. With the release of the CS4 version, Premiere Pro has taken another step forward in the realm of High Definition editing, with support for an increasing range of HD shooting formats. In this in-depth tutorial, DVC managing director David Clarke explores the software's extensive tools and features for capturing video, assembling footage, editing and mixing audio, adding transitions and effects, creating title graphics, and exporting the final result to file, disc or tape. This disc is your complete guide to mastering the full capabilities of Premiere Pro CS4!

Standard video DVD

This version is produced as a video DVD and will play on any DVD player or on a computer with a DVD player such as Power DVD.  Since a standard definition DVD is low resolution, the quality of the image when showing the full screen of a PC is limited.  So to overcome this we have panned and scanned the image during editing for clarity of onscreen text and information.  This version of the tutorial comprises 2 video DVD discs.

Flash DVD

The tutorial was filmed in 720P HD and so this second version is the entire tutorial produced as an HD Flash video file at 1280 x 720.  To play it you just put the disc in your computer and load the main index page up using your favourite web browser.  Then the video will play at the same size as it was filmed and should be as clear as a normal computer display.  This version has the advantage of being easier to read than the DVD-video version, but will only play on your PC.  This version was created using the HD Flash Export options of Encore CS4.  The entire tutorial comes on one DVD.  The tutorial content is exactly the same on both versions.

Why do we make two versions?

The Flash version is the easiest to make and the clearest to watch.  However many people still prefer a video-DVD version as they can play the disc in a DVD player which sits next to their PC.  This means they can watch some of the tutorial and then try out what they have learned on the PC.   Creating the DVD video version is a lot more effort on our part and one of the reasons other training disc producers no longer do this.  However after taking opinions from our customers we decided to carry on making the DVD-video version as that was the preferred version.

CONTENTS OF DISC 1

Getting started

You have plugged the computer in and turned it on - what next?

01 The start  Always the best place to begin.
02 Your DVC computerHow is the computer setup and what the different drives and programs are.
03 The project and Timeline settingsStart Adobe Premiere and you see two different settings - one for the whole project and one for the individual edits.
04 The InterfaceHow the different windows in Premiere fit together and what they all are.
05 Time to captureLets get started. this tutorial deals with getting footage from an HDV camera. Capturing DV is the same. Our advanced disc explains how to deal with other, on-tape based formats.
06 Setting the HDV cameraMost HDV cameras out put SD and HD. If you do not set the camera correctly it can cause you problems. This section shows the settings on a Sony HDV camera.
07 Getting Ready to captureStarting the capture window and setting the basics.
Hooray we are actually getting some footage into the PC!
09 HDV capture with AdobeMainly DVC customers buy systems with Matrox RT.X2 cards installed. This adds several features to Premiere Pro, enhancing capture window, for example. How to you capture HDV on a system without a Matrox card?

Editing

You have your footage in the PC now lets start making a movie.

10 The Project WindowNow the clips are in the project - where did they go and how do you use them?
11 The clip windowThe clip window is where clips are viewed before editing, where you trim them and choose the section you want.
12 Adding clips to the timelineSo how do you get clips into the final program?
13 Insert and Overlay buttonsTwo ways of adding clips at the click of a button and what they mean.
14 The timelineThis is where you will assemble your masterpiece - all the video, audio, titles etc...
15 TrimmingOnce clips are on the timeline you can adjust them with Premiere's extensive trimming tools.
16 ToolsPremiere has a selection of editing tools on screen.
17 Trimming audio not videoA basic need and one most people do not know how to do easily. It is simple when you know how!
18 Save the projectSave the project often, just in case!

Transitions

Now you have a basic edit lets start add transitions.

19 TransitionsHow to achieve a basic dissolve between two clips. Here we also discuss the differences between the old way of working, with an A and B track, and single track editing.
20 Changing the transitionHow to use a different transition to a cross dissolve.
21 Audio cross fadesHow to make a transition on the sound.
22 Fading clips inHow to make a clip fade in from nothing.
23 RenderingWhat is rendering? You will have to do it as some time so how do you do it.
24 Gradient WipesA different type of transition which can produce interesting wipes between clips.
25 Automate to sequenceAn often overlooked feature. You want to take all the clips in the bin, add them to the timeline and add a cross dissolve in one go - then use "automate to sequence".
26 Audio off CDWhat is the best way to get audio off a CD to use in your project. Here we use Windows Media player which does a really good job, quickly.

Titles and Effects

Titles are easy to do in Premiere and good quality. there is also a healthy range of video effects, and more available if you buy Premiere Pro with a Matrox card.

27 TitlesEveryone needs titles and Premiere Pro has a pretty good title designer.
28 Duplicating a titleYou want to make a second title like the first - make sure you do it correctly or you will change both the original version and the new one!
29 Title TemplatesYou want a good looking title - steal someone else's idea by using a title template.
30 Animating titlesYou cannot animate each letter in Premiere (that's a job for Adobe After Effects) but you can make the whole title move, roll and crawl.
31 EffectsWe do not delve in Premiere Pro's or Matrox range of effects here - this is covered on our advanced disc, so here we just explain some basics.
32 Slow motionHow do you do slow motion? This covers simple slow motion, if you want to see how to have footage start at one speed, slow down to another and then speed up again that is covered on our advanced disc.

Export from Premiere

You have finished your masterpiece - now you need to get the footage out of the computer and back to the "real world".

33 Export from PremiereHow do you get footage out of Premiere Pro CS4?
34 Record to tapeThis section covers record to HDV. Record to DV is similar, an in fact is slightly simpler, although it is the same basic procedure.
35 Adding chapter markersWe are still in Premiere and going to make a Blu-ray or DVD. But first we can add the chapter markers for the disc on the Premiere Pro timeline.
36 Dynamic link to EncoreHow to get the timeline from Premiere Pro to Encore - the new "dynamic link" of course!
37 Encore project settingsNow we get to Adobe Encore to make our disc. First you have to set the type of disc you are making.
38 More dynamic linkHaving set the project the "dynamic link" puts your Premiere Pro timeline into Encore.
39 Add a menuWe have the video footage, now we want a menu.
40 Preview the discThe basic disc is laid out - let's preview it before burning.
41 Build the discNow we make the final disc.
42 How do you make a DVDThe above covered making a Blu-ray disc. How do you make a DVD?
43 Exporting surround soundAdobe Premiere Pro CS4 can mix surround sound so what do you have to do to get this audio mix on your disc? It actually involves buying an extra plug-in!
44 Export to other formatsWhat other formats does Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 make and how?
45 Exporting a stillOur final topic of our basic disc. With CS4 exporting a still has become slightly more painful. Here is how.
