LG-Nas drive with Blu-ray

We have a new external back up and Blu-ray drive.  The LG-NAS box takes two hard drives and has a Blu-ray writer built-in, as well as a card reader, a eSATA port and a USB port.  It is a great device for backing up footage - just pop the card into the card reader and the box asks "do you want to copy this on to the hard drives". Say yes and the entire contents is copied onto the hard drives installed in the box.  The drives can be RAIDed as well so with two drives you have two identical copies of the footage and if one drive dies you simply insert another drive and carry on.  The speed is about the same as any card reader - so for example copying 16GB of data off my HD cards took around 20 minutes.

It can do the back up without being connected to any computer - so it is perfect if you are, for example, filming AVCHD on HD-SC cards - just pop the card into the box, copy the footage across, and you have an instant back up.

The box is also a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device.  This means computers can access it via a network connection.  It can either be connected directly to the network port on your computer or  via a hub.  NAS drives are not the fastest in the world - copying footage to and from the device to a computer was a little bit slower than an average USB hard drive, so it is not a great external device from which to edit.  However that is not the point of the box; it is designed as a back up device with built-in RAID in case a hard drive goes wrong.

Built-in Blu-ray

The box also has a Blu-ray drive.  You can either insert Blu-ray discs and copy footage from the discs onto the internal drives, or write files on the drives to the Blu-ray discs.   You can also write to the Blu-ray drive from a PC using the software that comes with the box.  Unlike other external Blu-ray drives you cannot write from ANY program on your computer, however you can make an ISO (an image) file up and then write this image using the Power Producer software that ships with the drive.  You can even play back Blu-ray discs, although not copy-protected discs which are looking for HDCP support on your graphic card and monitor.

We have successfully written video Blu-ray discs created in Encore using the LG-NAS box, as well as many other discs.
