TheADVC55 is a small compact analogue to digital converter.  It only does one way - analogue in - DV out - so it is best used for taking your analogue footage and recording it into a DV based system.

It can be powered by a 6 pin FireWire port and therefore does not need a separate mains supply. If using with a laptop please check that your laptop has a powered FireWire port as many do not.

For systems without powered firewire connections, a mains adaptor is available separately for £23 +VAT.

The ADVC110 can convert analogue to DV and DV to analogue. The ADVC110 is designed so that it can draw its power from the computer's FireWire socket, so you do not need a mains adaptor (one is available separately if your firewire socket is not powered). This obviously means fewer cables and less mess!

If using with a laptop please check that your laptop has a powered FireWire port as many do not.

One of the best converters for transferring VHS to DV, as it has an inbuilt timebase corrector to clean up your footage.

Why would you need a timebase corrector?

Tape deteriorates with age. When this happens the footage can become very 'jumpy' during playback. If this happens it is difficult to digitize into your computer. A TimeBase Corrector (TBC) will help to smooth out this footage and make it usable. If you buy a converter without a TBC you may not be able to capture old, unstable footage.

It is possible to buy a separate TBC so if you do buy an converter without one then it is not the end of the world, but if capturing old footage (10-20 years old) it may be a good idea to opt for this all-in-one unit.

Perfect Signal Synchronization: Grass Valley "PerfectSync"

ADVC700 not only incorporates the same video conversion technology present in the entire ADVC family of products, providing excellent reproduction of the source video footage, but also features PerfectSync technology. PerfectSync controls and synchronizes the transfer rate of IEEE 1394 communication with an external reference signal. This prevents skipped and duplicate frames and produces perfect conversion of all frames during analogue/DV conversion.

Many of the current analogue/DV converters adjust the output by skipping and/or duplicating frames in order to synchronize the DV signal to an external sync signal's frame frequency. In these converters, there is no guarantee that all input frames will output to DV accurately without frame repetition and/or frame drops. Since ADVC700 is primarily designed for studio environments, frame accuracy is essential for accurate offline/online editing. With PerfectSync, this is assured.

VTR Control by AV/C-RS422 Conversion

ADVC700 converts DV device control signals to RS422, to control an external VTR. Such control makes it possible to take in data from professional VTRs such as Digital Betacam from any standard DV editing software that features DV device control.

The Canopus ADVC-1000 converts SDI to DV and vice versa.

What is the difference between this box and the como1394?

The Canopus ADVC1000 and the COMO DV-1394 converters both convert SDI to DV and DV to SDI and therefore can be used to edit material from a Digital Betacam or SDI equipped player / recorder on a DV based edit system. Although both converters are the same price they have very different features.

In addition to SDI the Como device also offers component, Y/C and Composite in and out but the Canopus ADVC1000 only offers SDI. This makes the Como a more sensible choice for a varied environment, where flexibility is key. The Como can be connected to Betacam SP, Hi 8 and even VHS decks.

The Canopus SDI Converter may not offer all the other analogue possibilities but it makes up for this by being the only converter we know to offer Embedded Audio Conversion as part of the SDI signal.  The Audio can therefore be taken through the single BNC connector rather than separately as would have to happen with the Como.

The Canopus ADVC 1000 claims to have an elaborate system to ensure frames are not duplicated or corrupted called “PerfectSync” (patent pending). This relates to external video frequency synchronization rather than Audio Sync.
Both Devices offer RS422 machine control and Timecode support but an additional lead is required for this.

Comprehensive Audio Functionality

Smart Scan Conversion

Use TwinPact100 to scan convert on-screen graphics to analogue and digital video. TwinPact100 supports scan conversion of resolutions up to 1600 x 1200.

Scan convert any selected on-screen area with Grass Valley track and zoom Technology. Track, zoom-in and output to video any application window, any desktop area or dynamically track the area around the mouse pointer. Track and Zoom is ideal for sharper video presentations and creating focused tutorial videos.

TwinPact100 is an extremely high-quality, bidirectional analog / digital video converter. TwinPact100 will convert VHS, S-VHS and Hi8 analogue videotapes to DV and back in one simple step and can be used with virtually any Windows or Mac OS video editing system, or as a stand-alone converter without needing a computer.

  • Clean and Enhance Analog Video — TwinPact100 employs advanced 3D Y/C separation and 3D noise reduction functions for enhancing analog video quality. Poor analog source video is filtered prior to DV conversion to provide better quality video.
  • Advanced Image Enhancement Features — 2D/3D Y/C separation — 2D Y/C separation separates Brightness (Y) and Chrominance (C) from the composite video source signal by one frame. 3D Y/C separation separates by cross-referencing each frame with the frames immediately in front and behind, further refining and improving the overall image quality.   • Digital 3D Noise Reduction — Eliminates noise in the analogue video signal by detecting noise based on the characteristics

The Thomson Grass Valley ADVC-HD50 converter lets you instantly convert uncompressed HD video and audio from HDMI devices to the HDV format, output via IEEE 1394 FireWire, for use in your nonlinear editor of choice. Carrying on the design philosophy already present with standard definition (SD) ADVC products, the ADVC-HD50 converter sports a sleek, portable design with an emphasis on simplicity and compatibility; the converter does not require any drivers or software to set up, and is compatible with both PC- and Mac-based editors.

The ADVC-HD50 converter will convert any uncompressed HDMI source, such as an AVCHD camcorder, to the HDV format for easier editing. This also reduces the need for a high-performance system or costly hard disk drive storage configurations to work with uncompressed HD video. The converter may also be used to convert non-HDCP-protected video from other HDMI sources, such as game consoles and set-top boxes.
