Black Magic Intensity Shuttle

World's first USB3 capture device

Black Magic's Intensity Pro has proved very popular as a low cost device for editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro and Sony Vegas.  Now Black Magic have a USB3 version of the same device.  As Macs do not currently have USB3 connections it will only work on PCs.

Not all USB3 sockets are equal!

This device needs a USB3 socket and will not work on USB2 ports - it will not even install unless it finds the correct type of socket. Even then it will not work with all USB3 connections.  Most of the motherboards we have tried function correctly, as do most of the PCIe USB3 boards you can add to your computer. 

However USB3 Express cards WILL NOT WORK.   The device also does not work with the USB3 ports found on many laptops as the throughput is simply not high enough.  It is only recently with the release of SANDYBRIDGE processor-based laptops that we have found a laptop USB3 port that will work.  We have thoroughly tested the Intensity Shuttle with our latest, and fastest, Sandybridge machine - click here for more details.

Assuming it works with your USB3 socket then it performs very much like the Intensity Pro with the same range of capture and playback options.

Supported programs

The Black Magic Shuttle is supported in Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas and will work as a capture device for Grass Valley EDIUS. We have tested and used the Shuttle with EDIUS (on a system with the right USB3 connections) and are happy with the performance, although Grass Valley have said that they do not think the Direct Show drivers work as well as they should with this device and if using a desktop you should use the Intensity Pro.

The Black Magic Shuttle will work with AVID Media Composer 6 but currently does not work very well. AVID have not included ANY of the Black Magic USB3 devices in their list of Black Magic devices that work with Avid and in our own tests, with version 9 drivers, we would not recommend using the Shuttle and Avid together.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 does work very well with the Shuttle and we use this device on our own Sandybridge laptop.
