The Future of Liquid
Through an address as the Liquid Immersion user group by Jan Piros, the man in charge of Liquid at Pinnacle, we have been told the future or Avid Liquid.

Essentially Avid have decided that the product will not continue in its current form. They have been using the same code base for many years and face the prospect of making it work on Windows Vista which would required a considerable effort. Also in many ways Avid Liquid is competing with their establised product, Xpress Pro, so Avid have decided its time to make some adjustments.

They are working on a new editing program designed to work in Windows Vista, and using things in Vista that no one else is currently using. They will be position the new product as a direct step up from Pinnacle Studio, but not as a broadcast users program.

It will use a lot of the same logic and have many of the same features as Liquid but also some will be removed. For example they have said that the new product will not work with the AJA Lhe board so Chrome will not continue. The new product will not be called Liquid, partly because Liquid 8, is not a great name, but also because it will not be the same thing but something new, albiet similar. We can pretty much assume that everything that is in Pinnacle Studio, so built-in DVD writing, Hollywood FX, bakcground rendering etc.. will be in the new program but beyond that we just have to wait and see. We do not expect the new program soon either - personally I would expect a release sometime in 2009, but this is just based on the comments I have heard and nothing concrete.

The result will be that apart from a few patches there will be no new development for Liquid 7, and that means no support for some of the new formats that have emerged, like Sony XDCam-EX or Blu-ray writing support. It is even unclear if there will be any patches for the program released to fix issues we have right now. For example Liquid has problems with nVidia 8800 series graphic cards and since these are standard in PCs and laptops these days it means that it will simply not work properly on some new machines.

Does this mean you should not buy Liquid? Liquid does do a lot of good stuff right now and has more built into the program that most. It also lags behind other programs in some ways, in particular HD editing is nicer on different systems like Edius or Premiere using a Matrox card. Since we had this announcemnet we have actually sold more copies of Liquid than in previous months. If starting from scratch you are probably better off going for some other program because with Liqudi you know things will change, so what ever you learn may have to be re-learnt in the future. On the other hand if you really like using Liquid and it will be a wrench moving to something else then you may want to stick with the program.

Adobe in particular are hoping to attract wavering Liquid users with an offer of cash back if you own Liquid, or Avid Xpress Pro. If you buy Adobe Premiere Pro they will give you £125 back, and if you but the whole Production Studio Premium they wil give you £225 back. See Adobe section for more information.

Avid Liquid 7 ProAvid Liquid 7 Pro

Avid Liquid 7 with the MovieBox Pro USB2 breakout box.  The BOB gives you analogue in and out with realtime effects through analogue connections.  To use the Moviebox Pro you will need a fast computer and a graphic card with 128MB memory and that properly supports DirectX9.  Most nvidia cards with  FX5700 chipsets or above are suitable.  Matrox cards do not work with Avid Liquid.

The MovieBox Pro has composite, SVIDEO and component in and out as well as FireWire and SPDIF output for 5.1 monitoring.

Avid Liquid 7 Pro UpgradeAvid Liquid 7 Pro Upgrade

This upgrade is available for owners of Pinnacle Edition 5 or 6, Adobe Premiere 6.5, and Adobe Premiere Pro 1.x. The package contains the software and the new MovieBox Pro.  Please note that the MovieBox Pro does need reasonably specific requirements to operate - a decent USB chipset and a graphic card that properly supports DirectX 9.   An NVIDIA card with 128MB RAM and better than FX5700 chipset should be sufficient.  More information will be posted on tested graphic cards as it becomes available. The Edition Pro card does not support the new MovieBox Pro as it only has 64MB RAM - so if you want to upgrade to the new BOB and have a Pro card you will need a new graphic card.  The right graphic card will give you overlay on both screens in a two monitor set up.

If in doubt please email us at sales@dvc.uk.com and we will advise if we believe your graphic card will work.  Unfortunately as the product is very new the list of tested graphic cards is small, however, this will change as time goes by!

Does the Avid Liquid PRO breakout box work with USB1?

No. The AL PRO breakout box requires USB2.

Does Avid Liquid PRO work with every USB2 system?

No. A limited number of USB2 controllers do not support the bandwidth required to output video to the AL PRO breakout box. Below is a list of certified USB2 controllers:

How can I tell which USB2 controller is on my system?

From your Windows desktop:

-         Right-click on My Computer

-         Select Manage

From the Computer Management Dialog box:

-         Select Device Manager

Information about the devices installed in your system appears in the right hand pane of the dialog.

-         Scroll down to “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”

-         Click on the “+” to expand your view.

You will see something looking like this:

What do I do if my onboard USB2 controller is listed as incompatible?

Pinnacle recommend an Adaptec AUA-3100B PCI card. It is also sold as the Adaptec USB2connect 3100LP.

We have not yet tested this card at DVC.

Is there a Cardbus solution certified for Avid Liquid PRO?

At the present moment there is no certified third party Cardbus solution for laptops. However, many of the certified USB2 controllers are found on a wide range of laptops.

Will having other USB2 devices connected to my system affect the performance of Avid Liquid PRO?

Yes. Having additional high-bandwidth USB2 devices like hard disks connected to your system may compromise the bandwidth to Avid Liquid PRO.

When I am previewing to my monitor with Avid Liquid PRO, I am getting fewer layers in real-time then when I am not previewing to the monitor. Is this normal?

Yes. Processing the video to come back from the graphics card and send it to the USB port takes some system and GPU performance. Although some systems in our testing showed no difference in real-time performance with the Avid Liquid PRO box connected, typically systems will output one less layer than their maximum with the Avid Liquid PRO. Systems capable of playing back 6 layers of real-time with no preview option selected would play back 5 streams in real-time when using Liquid Edition output.

Do I need a specific graphics card to work with the new Avid Liquid PRO breakout box?

Yes. A DirectX 9 compatible graphics card is required for multi-stream real-time previews. The following DirectX 9 graphics cards have been tested with Avid Liquid version 7.

Can I use my old Liquid Edition Pro graphics card (ATI Radeon 8500) with the new Avid Liquid Pro USB2 breakout box?

No.  However the Edition Pro card will still work as it used to - giving all your effects out live to TV.  We have had some problems with systems which have a second PCI graphic for a second screen.  As before the clips will not play from the second screen but now they will also not play to TV as well.  Also if you move a playback window from the second (PCI) screen to the main screen the screen will briefly flicker black.  This makes you second screen more for organising your project window and clips than for any editing.

We would definitely recommend budgeting for a change of graphic card if upgrading to Pro.  We can supply a card that we have tested at DVC for this purpose.

Is it worth changing?

Yes - with the proper dual head card you can get overlay and playback on both screens, not just one.  Plus you get MPEG capture through the analogue connections.   Make sure that your computer is faster enough, however, and has a compatible USB port as well!
