EDIUS WorkgroupEDIUS 8.3 released with optical flow slow motion

The new features include optical flow slow motion, new proxy modes and a better display on a 4K computer screen. Full details of what's new can be seen below and we have posted some videos on our YouTube site explaining the new features.

You can download the updated from the Grass Valley support site:
https://www.grassvalley.com/support/downloads

What's new in EDIUS 8.3?

Optical flow slow motion
Possible the biggest new feature is optical flow slow motion. When a clip is slowed down EDIUS has to do something to give you a smooth looking result. Up to now it has done "nearest neighbour" where it simply repeated frames, giving a jerky movement, or frame blending where EDIUS cross faded frames to create a smoother result. Optical flow is another method where the computer analyses the movement and tries to create the missing frames. It can produce smoother results than frame blending, especially at lower speeds. It is not always better as sometimes it creates the wrong thing, especially when there is a lot of movement or you are starting with a video clip that is filmed at a low frame rate. For example 50P footage will slow down a lot better than 25P footage.

Set the default frame interpolation
This is a small option but useful - you can choose to set the default interpolation for clips which do not match the timeline - which could be ANY of the 3 options. Our preferred option is actually the simplest, nearest neighbour; we explain why in the YouTube videos we have produced.

Make a DVD or Blu-ray disc from a project of the wrong size
This change sounds quite small but will be incredibly useful for many people. Up to now you could only make a DVD or a Blu-ray disc from a project with the right settings. Now you can choose to make a disc from any project and then set the output needed in the burn to disc.

Better support for 4K computer screens
EDIUS 8 was remade to work better on 4K computer screens . If you used EDIUS 7 on a 4K screen everything was too small to see. With EDIUS 8 a lot of the interfaced scaled properly but not all of it. With EDIUS 8.3 nearly all of the interface scales properly, although there are a couple of parts that still need to be changed. The most notable one is the area where you can keyframe effects, which is still very small on a 4K screen. However, the changes means that EDIUS is now usable on a 4K computer screen.

Better quality Proxy files
EDIUS has had a proxy mode since EDIUS 6. The proxy files were always small and very low quality. With EDIUS 8.3 you can choose to make proxies at HD resolution or at full HD resolution, which makes them a lot nicer to use. With more RAW formats arriving, hard to use formats like H.265, plus cameras that film in 6K and higher, a good proxy resolution will be required for years.

Support for 50/60P Avid DNxHD MXF files is the Workgroup version
In the Workgroup version you can now make 50O and 60P Avid DNxHD files; previously we were limited to 50i & 60i.

Whats new in EDIUS 8.3 videos on the DVC website

We have just added 4 videos to our YouTube channel and website which cover the new features you can find in EDIUS 8.3. The videos cover the new optical flow slow motion option that has been added and why you may or may not set it to be the default interpolation. We also cover the new proxy resolutions in depth, look at the way EDIUS 8.3 behaves on a 4K computer screen, and the new ability to make a DVD or Blu-ray disc from any project.

You can see the videos on our YouTube channel and on the DVC website here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/What-s-new-in-EDIUS-8.3.html

Order a DVC system with EDIUS with EDIUS Pro and get EDIUS Workgroup for no extra cost
EDIUS WorkgroupFor a limited time, when you buy a DVC EDIUS system, we will give you  EDIUS Workgroup for the price of EDIUS Pro. EDIUS Workgroup 8 costs 434+VAT more than EDIUS Pro. It adds quite a few significant extra features to EDIUS, many aimed at broadcasters, which include a loudness meter, MXF exports, watch folders and the ability to edit files which are currently being captured. The Workgroup version of EDIUS can also export Avid DNxHD MXF files which are the only real way of easily moving projects from EDIUS to Avid Media Composer.

In addition to these features all editors will also appreciate:

  • Reduced playback resolution: You can drop the resolution to let you playback difficult timelines without rendering. This is really useful, especially if you are editing complex sequences with 4K footage.
  • No Internet needed: once it is set up the Workgroup version never has to be connected to the Internet, unlike the Pro version which has to be connected to the Internet once-a-month.

For a limited time we will supply the Workgroup version of EDIUS for the price of EDIUS Pro when ordered with a DVC system. Stock is limited so order now.

You can see our full range of EDIUS systems here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Edius_Systems.html

EDIUS tutorial update and individual sections to be available soon

EDIUS Workgroup We have been working on updating all of our EDIUS 7 tutorial to have the EDIUS 8 interface. As there is so much information cluded, and because many of the features work in exactly the same way between the two versions we have not yet completed the changes.

We have had several customers who have asked if they can just buy a section of the tutorial rather than whole thing, so we are going to make the tutorial available in 5 sections, or as one download. Each section will be 20+VAT, and available by download only. When you order a second section and install it it will simply add chapters to the section you have already downloaded.  The entire tutorial is 80+VAT . You get it free with DVC systems.

The sections will be:

  • A complete edit, tour and introduction to EDIUS 8.
  • Editing picture and sound
  • Effects
  • Importing and settings
  • Exporting and burn to disc

Each section contains 4-5 hours video.  Full details of what will be included in each section will be on the website when available. These should be ready for order and download in the next week.

You can read more about our EDIUS tutorial here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Complete-EDIUS-8-training-course.html

Adobe Premiere ProPremiere Pro CC2017 and new video apps released

New versions of the Adobe video applications were released on 2nd November, all called the CC2017 versions. There was also a patch released last week to fix a few initial bugs.

These are "new versions" of the Adobe CC apps so they will replace your existing version and any project you open will be updated so they can only be opened in CC2017. You can choose to keep the previous version of Premiere Pro as well as the new version, just in case you encounter a problem. Details on how to do this are here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/keep-old-premiere.html

There are new versions of Premiere Pro, After Effects and Prelude as well as many of Adobe's other applications. There is no update to Speedgrade which means you will not be able to use the "direct link" between Premiere and Speedgrade which was removed in the CC2015.3 version.

What's new in the Premiere Pro CC2017?

There are several new features and a slightly new look to some parts of the interface, such as the zoom bars on the timeline, which are designed with easier-to-see handles. The main new features are:

Team projects (beta)
At DVC we sell the CC for Teams version of Premiere Pro (you can buy tthe "individuals" version direct from Adobe). Up to now there has not been too much to distguish between the two versions. CC for Teams gets you more web storage space with Adobe and also calls to a higher level of Adobe support, but there was not a lot which helped when collaborating on projects. Team projects changes this because now you can share projects with a colleage or colleages and as you update the project these changes can be sent between the team and you can choose how to deal with any changes made.

Team projects is officially a beta version - i.e. ready to use but may have a few bugs. When finalised this will only be available in the CC for Teams version of Premiere Pro and After Effects.

New way of designing keyboard short cuts
Adobe have redesigned their keyboard shortcut dialogue so that you now have a visual representation of a keyboard which is colour coded to let you distiniguish between "global shortcuts" - those that work no matter what panel is selected - shortcuts which are specific to the area on which you are working.

New VR support
Adobe have updated their support for VR 360 videos, which was introduced in CC2015.

Refined Lumetri controls
The Lumetri colour controls have been improved - which includes a simple one click white balance eye-dropper, which actually works, unlike the same thing that is available in the three way and fast colour correctors. Adobe's intention is that you will not need Speedgrade because all the functionality that was in Speedgrade will be included in Premiere Pro and the latest improvements certainly help. In the process many old grading filters have been consigned to an "obsolete" folder in the effects list. These include the three way and fast colour correctors as well as shadows and highlights, luma curve, RGB curves and all the auto colour effects. If you want to use them they are still there, and old projects will open and use them, but we have to assume that in some version of the program in the future they will be removed completely.

Live text templates
There has been a nice link between Premiere Pro and After Effects for titles for some time. We even made a video about it which you can see on our YouTube channel here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Making-animated-titles-in-After-Effects-CC.html. They have enhanced this and made it a bit easier. In After Effects you can save a template file in a special format, which means we should expect to see lots of people producing libraries of templates which you can using Premiere Pro without even owning a copy of After Effects.

Improved audio effects
Some more audio effects have been imported from Audition into Premiere and as a result the existing Premiere versions have been made "obsolete". Like the colour effects they are still there but you should really use the new versions as they are basically better.

Support for Apple Metal.
Support for a new way of accerating effects using a graphics card on a MAC, called Apple Metal

Stitching clips
In Media encoder you can now choose to stitch (i.i. join) several clips together when encoding or ingesting and copying.

Global FX mute
A simple button but a useful one for effects heavy timelines with which your computer cannot cope. This button turns off all effects so you can just play the timeline back, and then you can turn all effects back on again when needed.

You can read more about the new features in Premiere Pro here: https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/premiere-pro/using/whats-new.html

Should you update now?

We have been using this version since it came out and have not had too many problems. There are some issues which pop up a lot on the user forums, some of which we have also experienced. We have put together a list of issues you may face which you can see here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/List-of-known-issues-with-Premiere-Pro-CC2017.html

On the whole this version is like all other new versions of Adobe Premiere - on the whole very good with just a few caveats. We would suggest that you keep the old version you are currently using on the system when installing, which it does not do as a default, just in case you come across a problem. The biggest problems with the last few versions is that sometimes you will open an old project and Premiere suddenly decides the clips have no sound or no picture. This is normally solved by wiping out all cache files, and is a PITA. The one problem we did have immediately on a system was with the direct link to Audition which no longer worked when we installed CC2017. On the above mentioned page you should find a registry entry you can adjust which will sort out this problem.

Speedgrade integration
Adobe removed the direct link with Speedgrade in CC2015.3. They have not re-instated it with CC2017. The direct link allows you to open a Premiere project in Speedgrade, grade it, save it and then open it in Premiere with all grades intact. If you want to keep using this a Premiere user has developed a program that will let you save CC2017 projects in CC2015.2 versions (the last version to work with the Speedgrade direct link). The utility is not free but you can try a couple of projects and see how well it works for you before committing to buying the program. YOu can see more details here: http://ntown.at/2016/08/09/pprobcc-adobe-premiere-project-2015-3-compatibility-converter/

Free Video Copilot plug-in for After Effects

Video Copilot have released a new plug-in for After Effects, which is now available and is also free!

The plug-in is called FX Console and is designed to speed up working in After Effects by bringing up a small control panel at the click of a button. This panel lets you apply sandard After Effects FX or your own presets, with the minimum of searching around in After Effects' windows.

You may know Andrew Kramer of Video Copilot from his large range of free comprehensive After Effects tutorials. He also produces various plug-ins, some free and some paid for. Click on the second tab to see a short video where he explains how to use this free plug-in.

RedShark videos on editing in Resolve

Red Shark have produced some videos about editing videos using DaVinci Resolve. They have a series of 10 videos, most of which have now been released. You can see the RedShark videos on their YouTube channel: : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfUQL_s3jL9L8I9Q1gs07xnCt9rXVxW_7

We made our own videos about editing in Resolve which you can see here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Editing-in-Resolve-12.5.html

The Red Shark videos approach the topic from the view of someone who is not really familiar with other editing programs. Our videos assume you are familiar with using another program like Premiere Pro or EDIUS and explain how to achieve similar results - rendering, motion paths, titles etc.. inside of Resolve.

You can read more about our Resolve desktop and laptop systems here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Blackmagic_Systems.html

We have some copies of Windows 7 left...
Windows 7Microsoft stopped selling Windows 7 at the end of October. Windows 8 was also discontinued. We bought up quite a few copies of Windows 7 while we could and still have some left, so if yuou want a system with Windows 7 rather than Windows 10 it is still possible. Please contact for more details.

You can see the full list of details of our systems here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/DVC_systems.html

Windows 7HitFilm Pro 2017 and Ignite 2017 released
New versions of the compositing program HitFilm and plug-ins, Ignite, have just been released. These include lots of new features and extra effects. FXHome, the UK-based makers of HitFilm, have improved the editing features of HitFilm so it is possible to edit your production and do all your effects in one program. The main new features are:

Video scopes for better grading, a bigger RAM preview, 32 bit colour support in the effects and the abilty to have an 8K comp size (as long as your computer can cope with this). They have also added J and L cuts, improved the trimmer and added the ability to preview the edit on a second computer screen - although there is no support for devices from people like Blackmagic. They have added an audio sync feature so you can select a clip with the camera audio and automatically sync it to a separately recorded audio track and have added a full audio mixer with a master audio track.

They have added a render queue, and support for 360 video. and added a "Dynamic search" which you can use on the timeline and effects list which lets you simplify both - very useful if you get a large, complicated multi-layered timeline, for example.

With the effects they have added more presets, better light sabre effects and some new distortion effects. You now get Boris 3D objects and title studio included in the main package as well. HiltFilm Pro 2017 now includes improved tracking and a new version of Mocha, which is a plug in so can be used with more footage and in many more ways..

The Ignite plug-ins , which work in many programs including Resolve, EDIUS and Premiere now also work in Avid Media Composer. In After Effects the effects can be used at 4K and above (there was previously a limit) and work in 32bit floating point colour for better quality.

You can see the HitFilm video talking about the changes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygGBojWvNFc.

If you order HitFilm you also get the Ignite series of plug-ins for other programs, or you can just order Ignite on its own. Despite its improved editing we still use other programs such as EDIUS or Premiere for editing, and do as many effects as possible inside the editing program, using the Ignite plug-ins for things the normal program will not do. However, we also use HitFilm itself for a whole range of effects which really just need a dedicated compositing program instead of an editing program with plug-ins.

The good news is that you buy HitFilm with a premanent licence (i.e. you don't have to rent it like After Effects), there are a huge number of free training videos on their website for you to learn how to use the program, and the price is:

HitFilm Pro 2017, with Ignite plug-ins: 308.86 inc VAT

Ignite plug-ins for Premiere, EDIUS, Resolve, Avid and many more: 176.11 inc VAT

You can read more and order the software here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/HitFilm.html

New Blackmagic 10.8.3 drivers

Blackmagic have produced some updated drivers for their range of cards. The 10.8.3 drivers main change is to "Fix installation issue on Windows 10 Anniversary Update." and they have a few other small bug changes. We have not used them too much but so far everything seems to work ok. However, if you have a system which is working perfectly we cannot see a good reason to update your drivers either.

You can download the new drivers here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/support/family/capture-and-playback

Windows 7NewBlue Titler Pro 5 released

NewBlue have updated Titler Pro and added better realtime support and more options for formatting titles. NewBlue Titler Pro is easy to use and has some great features - such as the ability to design a title, which you can then use as a template for other titles. Once you change the master (font style or colour for example) all other titles based in it are changed.

NewBlue Titler Pro works in all the major editing programs including EDIUS, Premiere, Resolve and Avid. It has almost become the standard titler for Avid since the built-in titler will not work at resolutions above HD.

You can order NB Titler Pro 5 from the DVC website: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/NewBlueFX-Titler-Pro.html

Avid Media Composer 8.6.5 released

In addition to some bug fixes this update includes:

  • Support for BlackMagic Design Desktop Video v10.8.
  • Automatically generated folders no longer show up in the Bin list in the Project window.
  • Create Bin Based on Folder: You can now create Bins based on the Folder where the source media is located.

You can download the update now from the Avid website: https://my.avid.com/account/orientation?returnUrl=https%3a%2f%2fmy.avid.com%2faccount

New DVC Gaming computers
We are adding a range of gaming computers to the systems we sell here at DVC.
