IOV Show

DVC at Pro Video 2011

The ProVideo show is next week on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th October at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.  DVC will be there as usual showcasing everything that is new with Adobe Premiere, Grass Valley EDIUS and Avid Media Composer.

As usual we will be running a theatre with the following program:

Wednesday Schedule

10.15  Boris RED in EDIUS 6
11.00 10 secret features of EDIUS 6
12.00 Will Adobe Premiere Pro take over the world?  Here are some reasons why it may!
13.00  Realtime mixing and streaming with the Teradek cube and Black Magic's ATEM Studio
14.00  Tips for using Adobe Encore CS5.1 for Blu-ray, DVD and FLASH
15.00  Effects with EDIUS - image grading, keying, improving sound and animated titles
16.00  What makes Avid Media Composer different?

Thursday Schedule

10.15 Realtime mixing and streaming with the Teradek cube and Black Magic's ATEM Studio
11.00 10 secret features of EDIUS 6
12.00 Will Adobe Premiere Pro take over the world? Here are some reasons why it may.
13.00 Tips for using Adobe Encore CS5.1 for Blu-ray, DVD and FLASH
14.00 Effects with EDIUS - image grading, keying, improving sound and animated titles
15.00 What makes Avid Media Composer different?

This is slightly different to the schedule published on the IOV website - we decided to run the demo on the Teradek Cube and Black Magic ATEM, instead of Boris at the start of the second day as we have had a considerably interest in these.

We will also have various systems on display including both of our Sandybridge laptops, EDIUS 6 with the STORM Mobile, Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Media Composer with the Matrox MX02, and Sony Vegas with the Black Magic Intensity Shuttle and the latest edition of the DVC brochure.

If you register before the 18th October then entry is free.  If you arrive without registering then you have to pay a £10 entry fee - so register before you go! Visit: http://www.iov.co.uk/provideo to register.

SPECIAL OFFER on Grass Valley STORM Mobile

STORM MobileGrass Valley launched the STORM Mobile at IBC and it is now shipping.  We also have a special offer on the STORM mobile from now until the middle of December.  Buy the STORM Mobile and get Vistitle at half price - £125+VAT.  Vistitle is a great animated titling program for EDIUS and the only deterant to buying it is the normal price (the DVC price is £250+VAT).  At £125 is it, frankly, a "no-brainer"!  Vistitle is only available at this price if you buy it with the STORM Mobile.

The STORM Mobile has HDMI, component, composite and SVIDEO in and out and can work with either a desktop or a laptop computer. It replaces the Grass Valley HDSTORM, and one major change is that it can be bought either with or without EDIUS, unlike the the HDSTORM, which is something many people have wanted for ages.

There are two versions:

Internal - this fits inside a tower case with a bay just like the old HDSTORM, EDIUS NX or DV-STORM.

External - a breakout box with all the electronics inside, connected to an interface card in your desktop computer, or an express card to work with a laptop computer. They both have the same abilities with the external having the advantage that by just adding a second interface card you can move the device between different computers. The external version is £100 more than the internal version. The STORM Mobile can capture in 8 bit and 10 bit colour into a variety of formats - Grass Valley's own HQ and HQX (HQX is the 10bit variation of Grass Valley's format), Panasonic AVC-Intra and XDCam-style MPEG2 MXF files. The other new addition, again very welcome, is that the STORM Mobile can output HD through the HDMI socket and standard definiton through the analogue connections at the same time from an HD project - so you can view both when edting.

The Internal STORM Mobile is £765 +VAT without EDIUS and £899 +VAT with EDIUS. The External version is the same price but you also need to buy an interface card which is £99+VAT for either the desktop or laptop version.

You can read more about the STORM Mobile here: http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Grass_Valley_STORM_MOBILE.html

Do not install Premiere Pro 5.51 if you use ANY capture card

As we reported last newsletter Adobe have released an update for Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 - 5.51. 5.51 fixes several bugs, notably one that stops you previewing HDV footage before capture. However, if using a Matrox, AJA or Black Magic device you will need new drivers. Matrox and Black Magic have both released new drivers for 5.51 but we are having problems trimming clips with both types of devices.  With the Mercury Playback GPU engine on the overlay will freeze after you have done a bit of trimming.   It is fixed just by restarting Premiere Pro but this is plain annoying.   We do not get this problem with the Mercury playback disabled.

We recommend you stick with Premiere Pro 5.5 and the first set of Matrox drivers for now. Premiere Pro CS5.51 will now install using the Adobe automatic updates, so if the Adobe software updater pops up and suggests you install, don't.  If you install 5.51 by accident you can only uninstall it by uninstalling and then re-installing all your Adobe software.  If not using the Mercury Playback Engine then 5.51 is probably ok.
